Choosing a Military School
There are military based schools for troubled youth which are effective
alternatives to the traditional military academy. Military based
schools will normally accept a teen that is not willing to voluntarily
attend. These schools give the teen the military type structure,
physical fitness, behavior modification, and leadership qualities that
will enable them to become successful members of society.
Most military schools are designed for children twelve to eighteen years of age with moderate to severe behavioral problems. Military schools have started accepting more oppositional and behavioral prone students, but are also designed for students who have mild problems and want to pursue a private education with the structure and discipline the military setting is known for. One goal military schools have is to teach teens teamwork and appreciation. Often they are successful if the teen isn’t just going through the motions of compliance in the hope that they will soon return home. Military school is not a quick fix, but there can be long term success if the teen realizes that they don’t want to continue on their downward spiral. Even if a teen desperately wants to change their life, they will not likely be able to replace the detrimental behaviors they have learned since early childhood in a few weeks, or even months. These detrimental behaviors must be replaced with long term positive reinforcement. Military schools have more long term success with teens than short term boot camps or wilderness programs, as the teen learns to modify their behaviors over time. Longer term and less hectic emotional growth are much more effective in helping teens replace their inappropriate behaviors with productive alternatives (Boot Camps). Military schools are typically privately owned and operated prep schools modeled after United States military based universities and colleges. This includes military vocabulary, military style teamwork, and military order and command. A military school’s main goal is to prepare their cadets for a career in the Armed Forces. Students are self-motivated and often desire careers in the military (typically as officers). Many military schools offer stay at home enrollment as well as boarders on site. Reputable military schools are deeply rooted in tradtition, which further enhances the student’s learning experience. Cadets are monitored very closely in the military school setting. A physical and mental evaluation should be performed on the teen prior to placement to ensure that a military setting will be beneficial to them. |
